I just finished a Netflix voice over job and it feels great. Obviously I can't tell you anything about the project, but i can tell you about the experience.
Every once in a while an actor gets to work with new people. Actually, every once in a while an actor gets to work. But I digress. This job was just such a job.
My favorite thing in acting is getting the email that says, "We'd like to book you...". Man, what a feeling. I have to admit, I'd been doing pretty well with another producer and received several un-auditioned for jobs and was feeling cockey. Just like the seven footer who walks by reminding me I'm not that tall after all, I was humbled when they dried up. Sure, I could blame it on any number of issues (pandemic, uh, that's all I've got right now) but that's not the truth. The truth is, it's a competitive industry and one can't take anything for granted.
So, when I got this email it was like old times.
Interestingly enough it was at a brand new studio. By that I mean brand new to me. I love working in a sound studio and finding a new one was a twist. Really nice, new, up to date, state of the art. And, they had a hitchin' post on which to lean. Very cool.
I arrived early (on time) and waited in the expansive lobby. Happy to say I wasn't nervous. Why would I be, I already booked the job? But, I was waiting for the new director/casting director/producer to call me in. Interestingly, she recognized me straight away. "That's funny," I thought. "I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've worked with her. But, oh well.
Walking back to the booth she said, "As soon as I saw you I knew you were the guy for the part." While that always feels good, I was thinking it was an audio audition. I didn't do any video, so how...wait a minute. Do I know her from something else?
You know that feeling? Somebody knows you and you should know them but don't? Lousy feeling. I kept racking my brains until it came to me. I've never seen this woman before in my life. Maybe she auditioned me for something else. Who knows?
Fortunately, it went really well. The project was interesting and, I think, well done. (When it's available I'll let you know here. Please watch). And, working with this director was such a pleasure. It really does make a difference with whom you work. I know, obvious, right? Sometimes in this business you don't get the choice. This was a good experience.
After all the fun was done we walked to our cars together. She politely brought up the subject of another project on which she was working and sheepishly asked if I'd be interested. Are you kidding? Do baby's like elephants in the woods? I mean, come on. Asking an actor if he's interested in getting another role is like asking if the great orange, bloviated petulant republican nominee for president in 2024 is a LIAR! Yes! I'm interested. Surprisingly, she was relieved, almost like she was worried I'd say no. Can you imagine?
So, lots of fun to be had and, hopefully, more fun in the future. Oh, and I was booked out of the blue for a tiny one day project. Hey, I'm on a roll. Hopefully there's no butter. I don't want to slip off.
Still working my novel and will be for another few months. That's the update to date. I'll have more in future.
Be well. Be blessed.
